Module 02 · Credit

Tips don't disappear just because nobody carries cash

Digital tipping arrives tied to the order: the guest adds it in the same payment step, so the tip is no longer loose change on the counter but a line item that can be settled transparently towards the staff. It works in the in-person flow too, where the guest orders the way they always have.

Who it is for

For bars, cafés and restaurants where most guests already pay by card or credit, which makes cash tips rarer and rarer. It matters in canteens and at festivals as well, where the team works rotating shifts and the tips still have to be accounted for at the end of the day.

How it works

  1. The guest adds it to the order

Tipping is not a separate operation and not a separate app: it is tied to the order, in the step where the guest is paying anyway. Nobody has to dig for coins in order to say thank you for the service.

  2. It works in the in-person flow too

Tips are not limited to orders placed in the app: they can be added to an order placed the usual way, at the counter or at the table. You don't have to teach the team two different habits, and you don't have to start by pushing every guest into an app.

  3. It settles itemised in the backoffice

Every tip shows up together with the order it belongs to, and lands in the transaction history. The end-of-day settlement doesn't run from memory or from the contents of a shared jar, it runs from line items. If you have several venues, you see per venue where how much came in.

What you get out of it

  • Card-paying guests can tip too

Someone who never carries cash simply didn't tip until now. If the tip is part of paying, it no longer depends on whether they happen to have coins on them.

  • Settlement you can see

You can see how much tip came in on which order. Nobody has to divide it up by estimate, and the question 'how much came in today' has an exact answer.

  • Less cash behind the counter

If tips run through the system as well, there is less change to count and bag at closing, and less to argue about at the shift change.

  • The same system as everything else

Tips show up where credit, orders and rewards already are: in one backoffice. There is no separate tipping app to roll out, and nothing separate to reconcile.

Frequently asked questions

  • Who decides how much the guest tips?

The tip stays the guest's decision — what the system does is tie it to the order and make it accountable. Exactly how it should appear at payment in your venue is something we put together with you during the setup stage of the rollout.

  • How does the money reach the staff?

What the system guarantees is this: every tip is visible as a line item together with its order, and can be settled transparently towards the staff. How payouts and the admin around them work at your place is something we go through in the free assessment, because that differs from one operation to the next. The movements stay traceable: they are there in the transaction history and among the auditable transactions.

  • Does it only work if the guest orders from the app?

No. Tipping is available in the in-person flow, so it can be added to an order placed the usual way at the counter or at the table. That way you don't lose the guest who doesn't want to open an app for a coffee.

  • What do the staff need to know?

There is nothing new to memorise: the tip happens in the same payment step they go through anyway. Staff training comes before go-live, and the whole rollout takes three weeks — assessment, setup, and a launch we run together.

Let's find where the tips are disappearing

In the free assessment we walk through your payment flow and find the point where tipping can go digital.
